big butterflies

This group is for pre-school children aged three and upwards.

The main aim of Big Butterflies is for the children to be given choice and opportunity to extend and develop skills, knowledge and understanding in all areas of the pre-school curriculum.

The children are encouraged to be independent. They have free access to toys and materials.

Staff and children work closely together and follow the guidelines to the Early Years Foundation Stage. The ladies have also undergone training in The High Scope Approach and wee use elements of this in our daily routines.

In Big Butterflies we feel it is important to give the children a blend of informal, child-initiated experiences, balanced with some carefully planned, structured activities geared to enhance their learning at the appropriate level.

We pride ourselves in preparing the children for their next step to big school.

Independent Learning:

The children have permanent access to the water tray, the sand tray, the book corner, the writing table, the easel, the play corner and other opportunities such as a number area or a discovery table which may change according to the theme. The children can use other games, toys and equipment. They know where they are kept and how to put them away.

By giving the children free access to these things they learn independence and responsibility. The staff are always on the lookout for ways to develop and extend their play into learning situations.
